Conducting Ethical Research on the Sex Trades

Description

Last summer, the Sex Workers Project of the Urban Justice Center (SWP) published a Research Guide to Conducting Ethical Research on the Sex Trades. During this 1-hour webinar, SWP Director of Research and Advocacy, Mariah Grant, and Research Consultant, Francesca Maviglia, will overview the guide's development and contents, provide guidance on its use, and answer questions. We welcome attendees to spend some time ahead of the webinar reviewing the guide and coming with questions and/or feedback. This will be a space for active engagement and an opportunity to provide recommendations for improving the guide to make it most useful to its intended audience, researchers both from academia and community groups. Following the webinar, SWP will publish an updated version of the guide integrating feedback received since its original publication.

As the Research and Advocacy Director at the Sex Workers Project of the Urban Justice Center she oversees the development of original research on human rights issues affecting people involved in the sex trades as well as efforts to decriminalize sex work at the local and state levels and improve sex work-related federal policy in the US. Francesca Maviglia (she/her) (Research Consultant @The Sex Workers Project of the Urban Justice Center) Francesca is a public health practitioner and advocate, with a focus on harm reduction, drug user health, and decriminalization and destigmatization of drugs. She holds a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from Yale-NUS College and an M.P.H. in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the Yale School of Public Health. Currently, Francesca is a Postgraduate Associate at the Yale School of Medicine where she helps run research studies related to HIV prevention among people who use drugs, sex workers, sexual and gender minorities, and other communities impacted by stigma and criminalization. At SWP, she works on research and advocacy projects aimed at reducing the burden of criminalization and state violence against sex workers.
